The main advantage to this watch is that its slimmer than other G-Shocks, which tend to be large watches, albeit relatively light weight.
I admire Casio for the bold and innovative designs they come out with. This watch is more plain and subdued in appearance compared to other G-Shocks, though still unique with its dark green coloring. Depending upon what you’re doing, the more plain appearance might be desirable. And of course there’s the retro appeal. In the 1994 film Speed, Keanu Reeves is wearing 5600 style watch. This style has been around for a long time.
My only real complaint, and the reason I give it four stars instead of five, is that the five alarms are not “multifunction”. That is, they can’t be set for a date (e.g., your anniversary), only a daily time. Why would I need five daily alarms? In that regard, I like my less expensive conventional battery powered G-Shock G9000 (Mudman) which does have multifunction alarms.
NOTE: With the exception of the G2300 series, I am not aware of any G-Shock solar that has multi-fucntion alarms. This seems to be a tradeoff when you get a solar watch.
Its worth noting that the size of the digits on the time display for this G-Shock are larger than on some of the other models, such at the Mudman. This is hard to tell in photos, but is noticeable in real life. I wear reading glasses. Its much easier for me to read the time on the GWM5600 than on the Mudman.
The 999 hour stopwatch is nice, versus the typical 24 hour that you’ll see on most of the other G-Shock models. There are things that I like to time that might last longer than 24 hours (e.g., elapsed time door-to-door when traveling on long trips).
From the world time screen you can choose 48 cities (29 time zones). I wish it showed time and date on the world time screen (as does my Mudman) instead of only the time. I keep my world time screen on London. I guess you just have to be smart enough to know that if its PM in California, and the world time screen shows AM in London, that means its tomorrow there.
The “atomic” feature is neat, but the radio reception only works at night and best when placed near a window. Don’t place it below something that will block radio reception, e.g., a metalic lamp on your bedside dresser. Comparatively, logging onto a time website once a week isn’t a major inconvenience. That’s how I set my Mudman, which gains roughly 3 sec/week. Be aware that its not inconceivable for a person to live in an area where this time syncing function won’t work, e.g., in a city surrounded by tall buildings, or in a valley surrounded by mountains.
If just considering battery cost, you’ll never pay for the additional cost of a solar watch by not having to replace the batteries. It’s cheaper just to own a conventional battery powered watch, and replace the batteries every couple years. The advantage to a solar watch is convenience. In some situations it can be difficult if not impossible to find a replacement battery, e.g., when on travel.
It might be worth mentioning, if you own several watches, it starts to be a pain to stay on top of which watch has a battery replacement coming up. With solar, you don’t have to worry about it.
Though I only gave this watch four stars, of my watches, this is the one I wear most often. Its slim, the time is always right, and I find it all around a great watch. If you want a slim tough watch that doesn’t have a loud appearance and you’ll never have to worry about, you can’t go wrong with this model.

Always been hooked on Casio – R. DAURIA – PA
The best watch I ever purchased. I’ve always owned Casio watches but thought I’d buy a G Shock Atomic. Wow! looks great, keeps perfect time, never needs a battery and very shock proof. An all around great watch.

Great watch. I have been wearing the more standard G shock for years. They seem to be unbreakable, which makes them perfect for my work situation where I am often using my hands in confined spaces. Unfortunately, I misplaced my last G-shock, and when looking for a replacement I discovered that I could upgrade to the GWM5600A-3. If I had one complaint about my previous G shock watch, it was that it would drift ahead in time, so that after several years the watch was running about four minutes fast. I was just a little too lazy to reset it. This model however locks up to WWV (US Government time standard station) every night and it keeps absolutely perfect time. In my job working as a broadcasting engineer we are surrounded by GPS locked clock displays. My new G-shock always agrees perfectly with those clocks. The solar power is a plus, but not something that I was looking for. I’m not sure how it will affect battery life though. Casio says the battery should last longer than a standard battery because it recharges from the solar cell.
